Buy Local Bazaar… Going On Now

Just stopped by the Buy/Give Local Bazaar going on now at 10 Storehouse Row at the old Navy base. Lowcountry Local First organized the shopping bonanza of an event, inviting a great many of our homegrown artisans, nonprofits, musicians, and food vendors to ply their wares.

Dos Rios were playing some Latin tunes while I did some serious Christmas shopping — don’t tell anyone, but my daughter got a hula hoop and the cutest little handmade skirt, my niece got a pair of earrings from Leslie Madden, my dad got a Crisis Ministries T-shirt (and a donation in his honor to the shelter), and my son got some homemade hot chocolate and a mug from Holy City Chocolate. I guess my husband and I’ll share the okra pickles from Legare Farms.

I also saw my wonderfully talented neighbor Anne John, who is a potter at Cone 10. She’s showing off a nice selection of her work — which would make for a very affordable Christmas gift (hint hint).

Barack Obama Elected President

Well, they called it at around 11 p.m. tonight — Obama has been elected our next president with a pretty resounding win. At 11:30, he had 333-150 according to CNN.

McCain gave one hell of a unifying speech to a crowd of disgruntled and angry Republicans. He preached unity and really showed some damn impressive grace in this loss.

I look forward to hearing Obama speak to the Grant Park crowd…. it’s coming up next.

Ketner introduces family instead of conceding

Bill Sharpe on Channel 5 looked all kinds of confused after they went to Ketner’s headquarters to hear her introduce her family instead of concede the race to Henry Brown. Then they went to Henry, who rambled on about what they need to do in Washington to make everything better (BTW: I love his accent).

I’ve seen random numbers sprayed all over the local news channels: Toya Hampton Green is up, Chris Fraser and Ann Oplinger are outpacing JGA III and David Engelman, but I’m not confident about these numbers. You can’t call these local races with only 20% of the precincts reporting.

Did You Vote for 14 year olds to have sex?

I read Greg Hambrick’s election guide, I studied the amendments while waiting in line today, and — still — I had no idea what the first amendment issue was all about. Were we voting to allow 14 year olds to have sex with each other? Were we voting for state legislators to have sex with 16 year olds? I couldn’t figure it out. I think I voted yes! What did you vote? Or did you abstain?

John Graham Altman showed a whopping 28% of the vote on the crawl a few moments ago. Are you kidding me, Charleston? Why would anybody for this windbag? Especially for the school board. Didn’t he already get his chance to serve for 25 years? Do you really think he did such a good job that he should get back on the board? Or did he just do a good job at keeping the poor folks down? For crying out loud, his platform was “throw the thugs out”! How is that a solution to our education woes?

I’m ready for tomorrow.

Early Returns — Election Night Coverage

The numbers are whack in S.C. but the “senior analyst” at CNN is calling it as McCain. There’s only 7 percent reporting! Sure, McCain may be up by 10 points, but still. I would rather wait. OK?!

Channel 5’s got an online update for the local races that I’m watching pretty closely.

The numbers are all over the place. On TV, they’ve got Linda Ketner up, online they’ve got Henry Brown up. Who’s in front? Can we even know before midnight?!

BTW: did anyone see Ron Paul as a choice on their ballot? He wasn’t on mine.

James Heyward, 20, was the first person in line for the new Apple Store on King Street. He was camped out since 9:30 last night. He’s so hardcore, he has an Apple logo tattooed on his arm.

The geeks have lined up 1,000 strong down Liberty Street, according to reports from the front lines, for the grand opening of the Apple Store on King Street. I dispatched my husband, a proud Apple shareholder, to check out the madness. He sent me some pics from his iPhone.
